Background: INTRODUCTION: Czechoslovakia won a place in the World Cup soccer finals in Spain next year when they drew 1-1 with the Soviet union in Bratislava on Sunday (29 November) -- the minimum result they need to qualify. The draw put them level with Wales in second place in Group Three headed by the Russians -- but the Czechs went through on goal difference.

Czechoslovakia in red playing from left to right nearly scored in the opening minutes.

But the 50,000 crowd was hushed when veteran Soviet striker Oleg Blokhin skilfully dribbled through the home defence to score with this beautiful long range shot in the 14th minute.

Ten minutes later the equaliser came. The Soviet 'keeper could only deflect this close-range shot for a corner.

Antonin Panenka of the Rapid Vienna Club took it. The corner was perfectly placed and Vojacek had no trouble running in unmarked on the blind side of the defence to head home. The crowd erupted as Czechoslovakia's passport to the finals was delivered.

The second half and the home-side continues to press for a win over the Group leaders.

Kzak almost scored from another corner taken by Panenka.

Soviet forwards play a skilful one-two inside the Chez area but this shot was turned aside by the 'keeper.

Wales nearly went through in the last few minutes. This long-range shot by the Soviet forward was just too wide.

Czechoslovakia attacks in the dying minutes but in the end were grateful for the draw.
