  • Description

One of the most striking features of the American political campaign is the crowd magnetism of Robert Kennedy, who recently resigned as U.S. Attorney General to run for Senator from New York State. He has also been the target of considerable criticism for running in New York when he has been a resident of Massachusetts most of his life.

Despite the criticism, no candidate has drawn more enthusiastic crowds wherever he has appeared. Kennedy and Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnieota (midwestern U.S.), the Democratic candidate for Vice President, appeared together in a motorcade through mid-New York Thursday (24 September) and crowds swarmed around them wherever they went.

The enthusiasm for Kennedy, obviously inspired by his close relationship to his brother, the late President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated nearly a year ago. Many of Kennedy's most ardent admirers are youthful.

As he passed through the Streets Thursday, young men and girls crowded toward him to shake his hand or touch him and some girls tossed their shoes to be autographed.

The press of people was so great on Fifth Avenue during the luncheon hour that traffic was practically at a standstill.

Mr. Humphrey took the occasion to dispel reports of friction between kennedy and President Johnson. He said he and the President were supporting Kennedy's campaign to the full.
