A fire which raced through a shopping market in Manila yesterday (Monday) caused damage estimated at US$1,000,000. Three people are missing.
The fire, believed to have been caused by an exploding stove, burned the building to the ground. It started on the first floor and within minutes engulfed the entire market.
The building, which was erected ten years ago, housed stallholders serving a nearby residential estate. As explosions rocked the building, everyone fled, abandoning their possessions to the flames.
Two of the missing persons were believed to be asleep at the time. The third person was thought to have been knocked down by falling debris.
It was the worst of four major fires which kept the Manila fire service busy yesterday. Two people were killed and a total of nearly US$2,000,000 in damage was caused.
