  • Description

General Sangoule Lamizana has been re-elected President of Upper Volta for a further five-year term. Final official results after the elections on Sunday (28 May) gave President Lamizana 56.28 per cent of the votes and a strong lead over his main rival -Macaire Ouedrago on the National Union for the Defence of Democracy Party.

SYNOPSIS: It has been Upper Volta's first democratic presidential election in 12 years. President Lamizana came to power after a military coup in 1966 but did not announce plans for a return to multi-party democracy until last October. A national referendum a month later approved the scheme.

The first round of voting was on May 14 but polling among the three million voters in the former French West African colony was reportedly slack. The Government claimed that some of President Lamizana's officials were beaten up in several towns and a spokesman declared that the last days of the campaign had not been democratic. President Lamizana's rival, Mr. Ouedrago won more votes than the military ruler in Upper Volta's capital city, Ouagadougou - but his overall poll was only 43.72 per cent, 12 per cent behind the President
