  • Description

After a two-week lull in fighting, communist commandos struck a village 6 miles (10 kms) northeast of Saigon on Thursday (20 February), half-destroying a textile plant.

Four government defenders were killed and five others were wounded when communist insurgents attacked an administrative office in An Nhon village in a dawn raid.

The textile factory, which makes material for government army (ARVN) uniforms, caught fire and was half-destroyed during the attack. Reporters from the village said the plant was hit by shoulder-fired rockets.

Three other strikes were reported on Thursday (20 February) against government bridges just north of Saigon. The attacks, which occurred within a dozen miles (20 kms) of Saigon, ended almost two weeks of relative quiet during the Tet lunar new year holidays.

In Saigon on Thursday, some 30 members of various opposition National Assembly groups clashed with police as they tried to enter the city's courthouse. The courthouse has been the scene of a long legal debate over the government's plans to drop a slander case against six opposition and independent newspapers.

Three opposition legislators were taken to hospital after the clash.

The opposition leaders, among them Father Tran Huu Thanh, leader of the anti-corruption movement, were escorting families of ??? newsmen recently arrested as alleged communist agents.
