Background: A TRANSWORLD (TWA) BOEING JET AIRLINER CRASHED AND EXPLODED ON THE RUNWAY OF ROME'S FIUMICINO AIRPORT TODAY (MONDAY). THE DEATH TOLL WAS GIVEN AT 42. MANY OF THE 30 SURVIVORS WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE PILOT, CAPTAIN VERNON W. LOWELL, 44, OF LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, WAS ONLY SLIGHTLY HURT.

WITHIN SECONDS OF THE EXPLOSION, FIRE TENDERS AND AMBULANCES WERE RACING TOWARDS THE BLAZING PLANE. FIREMEN, MANY WEARING ASBESTOS SUITS, SPRAYED THE FUSELAGE WITH FOAM, AS DOCTORS AND AMBULANCE WORKERS TREATED THE INJURED. POLICE KEPT THE ROAD TO THE AIRPORT CLEAR FOR RESCUE SERVICES. AIR TRAFFIC WAS IMMEDIATELY DIVERTED TO ROME'S OLD AIRPORT, CIAMPINO.

THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH HAS NOT YET BEEN ESTABLISHED, AND AN INQUIRY HAS ALREADY BEGUN. CAPTAIN LOWELL IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT TAKE-OFF WAS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE ONE OF HIS ENGINEERS WAS IN FLAMES. THE PLANE WAS TAXIING FOR TAKE-OFF EN ROUTE FOR CAIRO WHEN THE DISASTER OCCURRED. EYE-WITNESSES SAID THE AIRLINER SLEWED OFF THE RUNWAY AFTER THE EXPLOSION, AND HIT A ROADWORKS MACHINE NEARBY.

LATER THE WRECKAGE LAY SMOKING NEAR A LONG LINE OF PINE TREES OVERLOOKING THE MEDITERRANEAN. NOTHING REMAINED OF THE FUSELAGE EXCEPT ASH AND DEBRIS, BUT THE GREAT WINGS AND TAIL SECTION WERE STILL INTACT.

AMONGST THE PEOPLE ON BOARD WAS A DOUBLE CREW OF 17, AND 26 OTHER TWA EMPLOYEES WHO WERE TRAVELLING IN THE PLANE'S PASSENGER SECTION. THE PLANE HAD COME FROM KANSAS CITY, CHICAGO, NEW YORK AND MILAN.
