  • Description

Two Soviet Cosmonauts set a new space endurance record on Saturday after spending 85 days aboard their Salyut-6 space station. At 2.36 Greenwich Mean Time on Saturday morning they passed the 84 days, one hour and 16 minutes record set by an American tem four years ago. And they may be there for several weeks to come.

SYNOPSIS: The Russians' space triumph came only hours after two more Cosmonauts had joined them aboard Salyut-6. One of the new men was a Czech, Vladimir Remek.. the first man in space who is not an American or Russian. He and Soviet Colonel Alexei Gubarev linked up with the record-breaking Cosmonauts aboard Salyut-6 late on Friday night.

The Czech and Russian joined Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and Georgy Grechko on board the orbiting space station after docking their Soyuz-28 space craft. They'd blasted off from a base in Soviet Central Asia.... they were the second pair of spacemen to visit the record-breakers during their marathon stay in orbit.

Remek, a space novice whose father is a deputy Defence Minister in Czechoslovakia, and veteran Cosmonaut Gubarev, settled down for a long celebration with their colleagues. According to the man who's heading the programme, things on board the space station didn't quieten down until late into the night....in spite of efforts from earth to persuade them to sleep. The Soyuz-28 crew will return to earth after about a week in space....but it's not clear when their record-breaking colleagues will return.
