IPOH, WITH 180,000 PEOPLE, IS ONE OF ONLY 4 TOWNS IN MALAYA TO ACHIEVE MUNICIPAL STATUS. FOR THE PAST 69 YEARS, IPOH HAS BEEN ADMINISTERED BY AN APPOINTED TOWN BOARD.

    NEARLY 20,000 PEOPLE CROWDED THE CITY PADANG OR PARADE GROUND AS THE 72-YEAR-OLD SULTAN OF PERAK STATE, ACCOMPANIED BY THE RETIRING TOWN BOARD CHAIRMAN, MR. E.G. WALLER, FORMALLY DECLARED IPOH A MUNICIPALITY.

    MR. WALLER NOW RETIRES AS LEADER OF THE IPOH COMMUNITY, A POSITION HE HELD SINCE 1959, AND BECOMES CHIEF ADMINISTRATION OF THE NEW IPOH MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

    IPOH'S FIRST ELECTED MUNICIPAL PRESIDENT IS MR. S.P. SEENIVASAGAM, A PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY MEMBER OF MALAYAN FEDERAL PARLIAMENT AND OF THE PERAK STATE LEGISLATURE.
