Background: In West Germany, crowds chanting Iranian students crowded outside their country's embassy in Bonn on Wednesday (19 March) in a mass demonstration against what they described as the massacre of Turkestan tribesmen by the Iranian government. The students who have been staging a sit-in protest outise the embassy for the last eight days also began a hunger strike.

SYNOPSIS: The students were protesting against what they called the massacre of the Turkestan population of Iran by the Iranian government and against the murder of four members of the Fedayeen, the Marxist guerrilla organisation.

Turkish-speaking tribesmen in the north-east of Iran were locked in fierce battles against Islamic troops last year. This demonstration by the students was held in conjunction with a big hunger strike by Iranian students in Bonn.

Well organised Iranian groups are reported to have attacked suspected agents of SAVAK--the deposed Shah's secret police force--in thirteen West German cities. Similar demonstrations have taken place in other Western countries. Many Iranians are said to be living abroad illegally--a large percentage of them left because of the political situation and may return if order is restored. Other fled fearing retaliation as they had close links with the deposed Shah of Iran.
