    THE WORST BUSHFIRE EVER TO STRIKE THE AUSTRALIAN STATE OF NEW SOUTH WALES HAD ALREADY BY YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TAKEN THREE LIVES, ENGULFED 50 HOUSES AND CAUSED DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN 1,000,000 AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS (GBP500,000 STERLING). THE CITY OF WOLLONGONG, 50 MILES (80 KMS) SOUTH OF SYDNEY ON THE SOUTH COAST, IS NOW REPORTED TO BE OUT OF DANGER AFTER HAVING BEEN RINGED BY FIRE FOR SIX DAYS.

    AT ONE STAGE ON THE SOUTH COAST, MOST OF THE MOUNTAIN RANGE FROM AUSTINMERE TO KEMBLA GRANGE -- A DISTANCE OF SOME 20 MILES (32 KMS) WAS ON FIRE. MANY HOUSES WERE SAVED ONLY THE PERSONAL COURAGE OF THE FIRE-FIGHTERS. THREE CIVILIAN VOLUNTEER FIRE-FIGHTERS WERE KILLED AS THE FLAMES SWEPT THROUGH A GULLY, TRAPPING THEM.

    A POLICEMAN WAS BADLY BURNED AND ANOTHER 50 PEOPLE RECEIVED MINOR BURNS AS THE FRIES RACED THROUGH THOUSANDS OF ACRES (HECTARES) OF LUSH BUSHLAND. FIREMEN YESTERDAY REPORTED THE FIRE FINALLY UNDER CONTROL, BUT A VAST PALL OF THICK SMOKE HUNG OVER A 40 MILES (65 KMS) RADIUS OF COASTLINE AS EXHAUSTED FIRE-FIGHTERS AND CIVIL VOLUNTEERS BEGAN RETIRNING FROM THE BATTLE AREA.
