  • Description

JIM CLARK OF BRITAIN, DRIVING BRILLIANTLY IN A LOTUS, LED FROM START TO FINISH TO WIN THE BARCELONA FORMULA TWO GRAND PRIX TODAY (SUNDAY). ONLY SEVEN OF THE 20 STARTERS MANAGED TO FINISH THE DIFFICULT, TWISTING 227 KILOMETRE (ABOUT 141 MILES) MONTJUICH COURSE.

AN ESTIMATED 50,000 SPECTATORS HAD SEVERAL THRILLS AS CARS SPILLED AT HIGH SPEEDS AGAINST THE BARRICADES IN THEIR EFFORTS TO KEEP UP WITH CLARK, BUT NO-ONE WAS INJURED.

SETTING UP A NEW LAP RECORD OF ONE MINUTE, 34.9 SECONDS FOR THE 3.79 KILOMETRE (2.35 MILES) CIRCUIT, AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 145.034 KPH (90.64 MPH), CLARK WAS NEVER IN DANGER OF BEING OVERTAKEN. HE COVERED THE 6O LAPS AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 142.181 KPH (88.35 MPH).

HIS MAIN RIVAL WAS AUSTRALIAN JACK BRABHAM, LAST YEAR'S WINNER. BRABHAM MOVED INTO SECOND PLACE IN THE 10TH LAP AND HELD ON ABOUT 400 METRES (YARDS) BEHIND CLARK UNTIL THREE LAPS FROM THE END HE WAS FORCED TO RETIRE WITH ENGINE TROUBLE.

AUSTRALIAN ACE JOCHEN RINDT, WHO STARTED CLOSE BEHIND THE LEADER, FELL BACK TO FIFTH PLACE AFTER 11 LAPS, BUT CREPT BACK TO FOURTH AT THE HALFWAY STAGE AND OVERTOOK NEW ZEALANDER DENIS HULME IN THE 41ST LAP TO REACH THIRD PLACE.

NONE OF THE LEADERS COULD THEN FORCE FURTHER CHANGES IN THE POSITIONS, UNTIL BRABHAM'S RETIREMENT IN THE 57TH LAP GAVE RINDT SECOND PLACE, AND HULME FOLLOWED HIM TO COME THIRD.
