Background: SYNOPSIS: Washington - 4th April, 1949. Ten European countries, plus Canada and the United States, sign a Pact to protect their freedom and independence. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - NATO - was born and since Europe has experienced 30 years of peace. A peace maintained despite the growth of the distinct ways of life.
Communist control in the East, and democracy in the West.
Two Soviet countries, Hungary in 1956 and -
Czechoslovakia in 1868 aspired to freer conditions. They experienced only temporary freedom.
Original NATO philosophy a desire to keep the peace remains unchanged. But Russia and the Warsaw Pact countries have continually increased their armed strength.
Faced with such power and pressure, NATO must maintain a military balance - on land, sea and in the air.
The Allied countries are dedicated to preserving peace. During meetings with the East in Vienna,
Geneva, they pursue this task.
A task in which
Allied leaders are determined to seek detente and to control the risk of armed conflict.
Today, NATO with fifteen members, is resolved to safeguard the uninterrupted peace Europe has experienced over the past thirty years.
