Background: England bowler bob willis took five wickets for 61 - the best figures of his career - to give England the initiative for the first time in the current test series against Australia on the third day of the third test in Melbourne on Saturday (28 December).

England launched an all-out assault on Australia and dismissed them for 241 to take a lead of one run on the first innings.

Australia resumed at the beginning of the day with 63 runs for no wicket.

Then Willis, who was in pain for much of the day from the effects of a pulled thigh muscle, began his onslaught.

Ten minutes after resumption of play Australia's innings was in disarray with three wickets falling for only five runs. With able assistance from team-mats Greig and Titmus, Willis and the English side dismissed the Australians for 241. england's openers faced only one over and finished the day with one run for no wicket.

SYNOPSIS: England fast bowler Bob Willis in action ??? the third day of the third cricket test between England and Australia in Melbourne on Saturday. Willis soon had the wicket of opener Wally Edwards, then had Greg Chappell caught. Within ten minutes the Australians lost three wickets for five runs. Ian Redpath - here facing Tony Greig - helped stem the tide, but his wicket fell to Greig in the last over before lunch.

In the same over a similar fate awaited Doug Walters.

Australian captain, Ian Chappell briefly revive his side with a courageous 36 .. he was playing with an injured hand.

But the devastating Willis was again too strong and Chappell was dismissed l b w.

Fred Titmus helped the English effort by dismissing Australian stubborn wicket keeper Rodney Marsh for forty-four.

It was a disastrous final twenty minutes for Australia. Mallett was run out and Max Walker caught by Knott from a ball by Willis.

To finish the day the big Englishman bowled the Australian pace bowler, Jeff Thompson. In the last twenty minutes the Australians made only four runs to finish with 241, giving England a first innings lead of one run.
