  • Description

West Germany expects her greatest ever wine harvest this year. Estimates say it will be approximately 30 per cent higher than the record-breaking year of 1959. An ever-increasing problem to wine growers is how to store the grape juice. A novel idea was thought of by imaginative Hermann Lorsch, owner of the "Weingut Lorsch" (Vineyard) in Bergzabern. He ordered large plastic balloons to be made - each capable of storing 50,000 litres of juice.

Never short of ideas, Herr Lorsch placed empty balloons in his swimming pool - filled with water - and than trucks arrived to pump their load of grape juice into the balloon. Once full, the large plastic container is easy to handle on the surface of the pool.

A special plastic foil inside the balloon keeps the grape juice completely tasteless, and the idea has been a great success. Herr Lorsch has also been using larger balloons capable of storing some 200,000 litres of juice.

In France too, the growers have a storage problem. In the Beaujolais district they had the idea of storing the grape juice in several disused water reservoirs in the surrounding villages.
