  • Description

BRITISH TROOPS IN ADEN FOUGHT SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH THE LOCAL POPULACE TODAY - AGAINST FLOODING WHICH FOLLOWED THE HEAVIEST RAINSTORM IN LIVING MEMORY. THE STORY ADDED TO THE ALREADY HEAVY SECURITY BURDEN IN THE PROTECTORATE, WHICH HAS SO FAR SEEN THE UNEARTHING OF A LARGE ARMS CACHE DURING PREPARATIONS FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS MISSION ON INDEPENDENCE.

THE STORM POURED OVER ADEN FOR 10 HOURS TODAY, DISRUPTING TELEPHONE AND POWER SERVICES, TEMPORARILY CLOSING THE AIRPORT AND DESTROYING LARGE QUANTITIES OF STORED FOODSTUFFS. SCORES OF CARS WERE DAMAGED, OTHERS WERE ABANDONED, 21 BRITISH SERVICE FAMILIES HAD TO BE EVACUATED FROM TWO BUILDINGS AND SHOPS AND HOMES WERE FLOODED.

BUT WHILE SOME TROOPS HELPED WITH THE FLOOD WATERS, OTHERS WENT ABOUT SECURITY PREPARATIONS IN READINESS FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THE UN MISSION. THE WORK WENT ON FOLLOWING THE DISCOVERY YESTERDAY OF ONE OF THE BIGGEST ARMS HAUL MADE IN ADEN FOR MONTHS. BAZOOKAS, MINES, GRENADES AND 4,536 ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION WERE INCLUDED IN THE HAUL, WHICH WAS FOUND IN THE SHEIK OTHMAN SUBURB.

A MIDDLE EAST COMMAND SPOKESMAN DESCRIBED THE CACHE AS BELONGING TO THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT WHICH, WITH THE FEDERATION FOR THE LIBERATION OF OCCUPIED SOUTH YEMEN (FLOSY) HAS CALLED FOR STRIKES AND DEMONSTRATIONS WHEN THE UN MISSION ARRIVES. FLOSY, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH REUTER, HAS WARNED THAT EVENTS IN ADEN DURING THE MISSION'S VISIT "WOULD SURPRISE THE BRITISH AUTHORITIES AND THEIR 'PUPPET GOVERNMENT,'" AND BOTH ORGANISATIONS, WHICH ARE BANNED, HAVE SAID THAT COMMANDO ACTIVITIES WOULD BE CARRIED OUT AGAINST THE BRITISH TROOPS.

THE MISSION HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN ADEN THIS WEEKEND, BUT TONIGHT HE POSITION BECAME OBSCURE. MIDDLE EAST AIRLINES, BY WHICH THE MISSION WAS BOOKED FROM JEDDAH TOMORROW, HAS CANCELLED ITS FLIGHT BECAUSE OF THE EXPECTED STRIKES, AND AN ALITALIA FLIGHT THIS EVENING WAS DIVERTED TO KHARTOUM BECAUSE OF THE FLOODS. IT CARRIED A LIAISON OFFICER FOR THE MISSION.

A MEMBER OF THE ADVANCE PARTY ALREADY IN ADEN SAID: "WE HAVE NO INFORMATION WHEN THE MISSION IS COMING."
