  • Description

During their 15-day tour of the People's Republic of China, the men and women of the English table-tennis team took some time off for visits to a Chinese manufacturing commune just outside Shanghai, and to a workers' housing estate in the north of the city itself.

At the Ma Chiao commune 35,000 people grow their own food, make their own tools, educate their own children, treat their sick, and listen to their own radio programmes. The commune is typical of thousands throughout rural China, aimed at providing all the basic needs for the life of a community in a single administrative unit.

Communes like this are not merely agricultural. As a result of a change in central Government policy known as the 'Great Leap Forward' they were urged to gear up for industrial manufacture, whatever resources were to hand. The Ma Chiao commune had, as the English sporting visitors saw, a tiny shipyard where small cargo boats were made from cement to save on valuable timber.

The visitors also saw something of the housing of Chinese workers next day in the north of Shanghai, at the Peng Pu workers settlement, which houses 15,000 people.

The estate comprises rows and rows of apartment blocks in uniform greys and browns. It has its own schools, shops, marked and 'service stations', where housewives do some of the washing and mending of the community.

China has accepted an invitation to send a table-tennis team to England either at the end of this year or early in 1972. Last visit to England by a Chinese team was in 1965.
