  • Description

ONLY ONE MAN WAS ARRESTED IN LONDONDERRY, NORTHERN IRELAND, TODAY (SATURDAY) AS CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY. IT WAS A VIVID CONTRAST TO THE LAST LONDONDERRY MARCH, IN OCTOBER 1968, WHEN THE MARCH WAS FOLLOWED BY THREE DAYS OF RIOTING THE 10,000 MARCHERS TODAY WERE CONFRONTED BY COUNTER DEMONSTRATORS. BUT THE SCUFFLES WHICH RESULTED WERE NOT SERIOUS.

THE MARCHERS SANG "WE SHALL OVERCOME" AS THEY ENTERED THE CITY. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, A MAN WEARING A CRASH HELMET BEGAN TO WAVE THE BRITISH FLAG (THE UNION FLAG). HE WAS CHASED BY MARCHERS AND POLICE, AND MANAGED TO AVOID THE PURSUERS AT FIRST BY JUMPING IRON RAILINGS AROUND THE WAR MEMORIAL. BUT THE MARCHERS TRAPPED HIM, COINS, BOTTLES AND PUNCHES WERE THROWN, AND THE FLAG WAS TAKEN AWAY. THE MAN WAS TAKEN AWAY BY THE POLICE.

ABOUT 30 COUNTER-DEMONSTRATORS BEARING RED, WHITE AND BLUE SCARVES TRIED TO STOP THE MARCH BY SITTING DOWN IN ITS PATH, BUT POLICE MOVED THEM BEFORE THE MARCHERS ARRIVED.

CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATIONS ARE USUALLY HELD ON SATURDAY AFTERNOONS IN NORTHERN IRELAND. AS TODAY WAS THE DAY ON WHICH THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE WAS RUN THE DEMONSTRATIONS HAS HELD IN THE MORNING SO THAT LOYALTIES WERE UNDIVIDED.
