  • Description

MORE AID FOR SOUTH ARABIA... THAT WAS THE PLEDGE GIVEN BY BRITAIN AT THE OPENING OF THE SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERATION CONFERENCE AT LANCASTER HOUSE IN LONDON TODAY (TUESDAY). THE CONFERENCE IS INTENDED TO GIVE THE FEDERATION A MORE LIBERAL CONSTITUTION, LEADING ULTIMATELY TO INDEPENDENCE.

WELCOMING THE DELEGATES FROM 13 ARAB SHEIKHDOMS, MR. SANDYS, BRITAIN COMMONWEALTH AND COLONIAL SECRETARY, SAID THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WAS ACTIVELY CONSIDERING WHAT FURTHER FINANCIAL SUPPORT IT COULD GIVE THE FEDERATION. "IT WOULD BE QUITE ENOUGH", HE SAID, "IF THE FEDERATION WERE FACED ONLY WITH THE NORMAL PROBLEMS OF POLITICAL EVOLUTION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. UNFORTUNATELY YOU ARE FACED WITH THE CONSTANT DANGER OF INVASION FROM WITHOUT AND SUBVERSION FROM WITHIN."
SULTAN AHMAD BIN ABDULLAH, MINISTER OF NATIONAL GUIDANCE, FADHLI STATE, SAID THAT THEY MUST ACHIEVE AN AUTONOMOUS ARAB STATE WHICH WOULD TAKE ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE IN THE ARAB FAMILY. EVERY TRUE SOUTH ARABIAN WANTED INDEPENDENCE FOR HIS COUNTRY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

SEIYID ZAIN ABDU BAHARUN, CHIEF MINISTER, ADEN STATE SAID THAT THE FEDERATION'S PRESENT CONSTITUTION HAD NOT PROVED SATISFACTORY. THEY WANTED A CONSTITUTION BASED ON THE WILL AND DEMANDS OF THE PEOPLE. THEY WERE PART OF THE BIGGER ARAB WORLD AND WERE FACING THE GROWING NATIONALISMS THAT WERE ESTABLISHING THEMSELVES IN ALL ARAB STATES.
