Q. "What decision did you actually take about China?"



A. "About the China question, the Bureau voted unanimously to accept China as a member of FINA, that is the swimming association of the People's Republic of China."



Q. "Where does this leave Taiwan?"



A. "Taiwan still remains a member of the FINA."



Q. "Do you think that the Chinese will accept membership on these terms?"



A. "My personal opinion is that I don't think they will -- on the basis of what they have told the press, and told me personally -- but this is up to them to tell us this. We have given them the opportunity to be a member of FINA."



Q. "How do you think Taiwan will react to this?"



A. "I don't think Taiwan should have any particular kind of adverse reaction because they still remain members of FINA."

Background: At a meeting in Cairo on Monday (16 September) the International Swimming Federation (FINA) unanimously accepted The People's Republic of China's application for membership.

Mr. Harald Henning, the United States Chairman of the Federation, also announced that China's request for the expulsion of Taiwan from the Federation was rejected.

China withdrew from FINA, which represents 106 countries, in 1958.

Mr. Henning spoke to Visnews reporter Bob Weaver after the meeting. A transcript of the interview follows:
