YITZHAK SHAMIR (SEQ 1): "Israel remains faithful to its commitment under the Camp David accords. Israel is cautious against attempts to (indistinct) renegotiate or by-pass them. These accords are the only accepted blueprint for the implementation of Security Council resolutions 242 and 338".
GEORGE SCHULTZ (SEQ 2-4): "Of the peoples of the world who need and deserve a place with which they can truly identify the Palestinian claim is truly undeniable. But Israel can only have peace in a context in which the Palestinian people also realise their legitimate rights. Similarly, the Palestinian people will be able to achieve their legitimate rights only in a context which gives Israel what it so clearly has a right to and demands to exist, to exist in peace and security. The Camp David agreements resting squarely on United Nations' Security Council resolution 242 with its formula of peace for territory, remain available to those who would accept a challenge to make this journey with us. The road will not be easy, but in his statement, President Reagan made a number of proposals, which for those who are willing to join the effort, make the journey safer and easier. I call on all concerned to accept President Reagan's challenge and hasten the realisation of true peace in the Middle East."

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Yitzhak Shamir, reaffirmed his country's support for the Camp David peace accords in a speech to the 37th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on September 30. During the speech, boycotted by many delegates who stage a walk-out, Mr. Shamir attacked the United nations for failing to condemn acts of aggression carried out against Israel. He urged the international community to formally ban what he called Palestinian terrorism and went on to stress that Israel remained faithful to the Camp David talks. Mr. Shamir said Israel was cautious about any attempts by by-pass the Egyptian-Israeli talks. In the same debate, Mr. George Schultz, the U.S. Secretary of State, said the Palestinian people deserved a place with which they could truly identify. But, the Palestinians must also recognise the legitimate rights of Israel. Mr. Schultz agreed with Mr. Shamir in asserting that the Camp Davie accords rest on resolution 242 of the U.N. Security Council with its formula of peace in exchange for territory. But the U.S. Secretary of State also called upon delegates to accept President Reagan's proposals for a settlement in the Middle East, which have been rejected outright by the Israeli Government. President Reagan has called for a self-governing Palestinian West Bank and Gaza Strip in association with Jordan.
