  • Description

At least eleven people died as fire swept through a four-storey hotel in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday morning (September 13) Another 25 people were injured, many of them as they jumped from windows or fell from ropes made from bed-sheets.

The hotel was completely burnt out and was declared unsafe to enter. But firemen believe that more bodies will be found when a further search is made. Some of the guests are still unaccounted for. The fire is thought to have started in the entrance to the building and to have shot up the unenclosed stairways inside. The quests, many of them elderly, tried to escape through the windows. Firemen caught some of them as they jumped or fell. A temporary morgue was set up nearby.

The Los Angeles authorities have described the fire as the worst in the history of the city.
