  • Description

QUEEN JULIANA OF HOLLAND AND KING BAUDOIUIN OF BELGIUM TODAY (THURSDAY) OPENED THE NEW INTERNATIONAL SHIP CANAL WHICH GOES FROM TERNEUZEN, IN HOLLAND, TO GENT, BELGIUM. IN A CEREMONY AT TERNEUZEN, THE DUTCH QUEEN AND THE BELGIUM KING OPENED THE SEA SLUICE DOORS AND THE CANAL ITSELF.

THE NEW CANAL, WHICH GIVES ACCESS TO INLAND BELGIUM FROM THE WESTERSCHELDE OF HOLLAND, IS AN INDIRECT PART OF HOLLAND'S DELTA PLAN. THE PLAN INVOLVES THE CONTROLLING OF THE VAST RHINE-MEUSE-SCHELDT ESTUARY WITH A PROJECT OF NEW DYKES AND THE BUILDING OF ADDITIONAL ROADS, BRIDGES AND CHANNELS.

THE DELTA PLAN IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST ENGINEERING PROJECTS, DUE FOR COMPETITION IN 1980, AND IS EXPECTED TO COST GBP300,000,000.

WITH THE OPENING OF THE NEW CANAL, SHIPS OF UP TO 60,000 TONS FROM THE NORTH SEA CAN SAIL ALL THE WAY TO THE INDUSTRIAL HEARTLAND OF BELGIUM AND THE HARBOURS OF GENT. COMMUNICATION FROM THE NORTH SEA TO INLAND TRANSPORTATION POINTS IS GREATLY FACILITATED.

THE FIRST COMMERCIAL VESSEL THROUGH THE CANAL TODAY WAS THE 24,000 TON "TEXACO GHENT", FROM LONDON. IT FOLLOWED A BELGIAN NAVY MINESWEEPER AND OTHER NAVAL VESSELS FROM BOTH COUNTRIES WHOSE CREWS SALUTED THE ROYAL GUESTS AS THE SHIPS PASSED THROUGH THE CANAL.

THE CANAL, PAID FOR JOINTLY BY BELGIUM AND HOLLAND, COST 500 MILLION DUTCH GULDEN (APPROX. GBP57,536,271 STERLING).
