  • Description

Milan has seen the inauguration of an helicopter service from the city proper to the Malpensa airport (40 kilometers away) which covers the distance in what is considered a "record" time. Before this new service was inaugurated persons going from Milan to the Malpensa had to count on an hours ride or more by automobile (according to traffic conditions).

Some of the flights of this service after stopping off at the Malpensa airport continue on to the Lugano airport in Switzerland. The machine used for these flights is a civilian version of the H 2I which was used with good results during the Korean war. It is the Vertol 44B type and is surnamed the "flying banana". The machine can carry 15 passengers, can reach an altitude of 4000mts but usually keeps to an altitude of 400 to 500 mts and cruises at a speed of 160 kms per hour.
