  • Description

A HELICOPTER THAT CAN BE PACKED AWAY IN A LARGE CRATE - AND A NEW EXPERIMENTAL VERTICAL TAKE-OFF AIRCRAFT. THESE WERE TWO OF THE HIGHLIGHTS AT THE HANOVER AIR SHOW WHEN IT OPENED THIS MORNING (THURSDAY).

THE HELICOPTER, THE DORNIER DO 32, IS THE FIRST HELICOPTER TO BE BUILT IN WEST GERMANY SINCE THE WAR. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST COMPLETELY PORTABLE HELICOPTER IN THE WORLD. SO PORTABLE IN FACT THAT THE MAKERS CLAIM IT CAN EASILY BE TOWED ALONG IN A MOTOR-CAR TRAILER WHICH CAN ALSO ACT AS A TAKE-OFF AND LANDING PLATFORM. THE CRAFT IS A SINGLE-SEATER AND CAN ALSO BE UNPACKED FROM ITS BOX AND COMPLETELY ASSEMBLED IN FIVE MINUTES. THE MAKERS CLAIM GREAT VERSATILITY OF THE DO 32, WHICH THEY SAY CAN BE USED BY THE PRIVATE BUSINESSMAN TO TAKE HIM ABOUT HIS DAY'S WORK OR USED FOR SPORT OR TOURING, MOUNTAIN OR SEA RESCUE, TRAFFIC CONTROL, BORDER PROTECTION, ACCIDENT ASSISTANCE, OR AERIAL TOPDRESSING.

THE OTHER BIG ATTRACTION TODAY WAS ALSO BUILT IN GERMANY. IT'S THE VJ 101 C VERTICAL TAKE-OFF EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT. THIS NEW INTERCEPTOR IS BUILT TO REACH SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF MARCH 2, OR TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND. TECHNICALLY IT IS DESCRIBED AS A HIGH-WING MONOPLANE WITH A ONE-PIECE SLIGHTLY SWEPT WING. A SWIVELLING POD CARRIES TWO ENGINES AT EACH WING-TIP AND THERE ARE MORE LIFT-ENGINES IN THE FUSELAGE.

THE HANOVER AIR SHOW, WHICH INCLUDES EXHIBITS FROM COUNTRIES FINISHES ON MAY 3.
