Background: French President de Gaulle visited Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., Apr 22, and placed a wreath the "The Tomb of the Unknowns". It was the first day of his American visit and earlier had received a great welcome from crowds lining the city's streets as he drove from the airport in an open car.
Later, the President visited President Eisenhower at the White House for a seventy-minute talk. In the evening he was to be guest-of-honour at a White House banquet.
It is considered that President de Gaulle is in a good position to make an important contribution to next month's Summit conference as he was the last Western leader to confer with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev.
