  • Description

TWO THOUSAND STRIKING IRON MINERS MARCHED INTO PARIS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT'S REJECTION OF THEIR PAY AND HOURS CLAIMS. THE MEN, FROM THE LORRAINE REGION, MADE THE 200-MILE (300KLMS) TREK IN A CAVALCADE OF CARS, MINI-BUSES AND MOTORCYCLES, STRETCHING OVER SEVERAL MILES.

THE MINERS' ARRIVAL CAUSED TRAFFIC CHAOS IN THE CAPITAL'S OUTSKIRTS, WHERE THEY WERE GREETED BY DEMONSTRATIONS OF SOLIDARITY FROM WORKERS AT ROADSIDE FACTORIES. AFTER PARKING THEIR VEHICLES, THE MINERS, MANY OF WHOM WORE BLUE WORKING OVERALLS AND HELMETS WITH LAMPS, WERE DRIVEN IN A FLEET OF HIRED COACHES TO THE CENTRE OF PARIS.

THEY HELD A MASS RALLY IN THE ESPLANADE DES INVALIDES BEFORE MARCHING TO THE MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY TO LODGE THEIR PROTEST. BUT THE MINISTER WAS AT A CABINET MEETING CALLED TO DISCUSS BOTH THE IRON MINERS' STRIKE AND THE 13-DAY-OLD STRIKE OF 240,000 COAL MINERS. AFTER THE MEETINGS, A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THERE WAS LITTLE HOPE OF AN IMMEDIATE SETTLEMENT OF THE STRIKES.

HOWEVER, FRESH HOPE OF A SETTLEMENT TO THE COAL STRIKE CAME TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) WHEN COAL BOARD OFFICIALS MET STRIKERS' REPRESENTATIVES. THE GOVERNMENT WAS REPORTED TO BE PREPARED TO MAKE SOME CONCESSIONS. THESE WERE BELIEVED TO BE A BETTER PAY OFFER AND A GUARANTEE THAT COAL OUTPUT WILL BE MAINTAINED AT ITS PRESENT LEVEL.
