  • Description

In the Dewar Cup International Tennis Tournament at the Albert Hall, London, on Friday (5 November), Manual Orantes of Spain won through to the finals with a decisive victory over Britain's Mark Cox.

SYNOPSIS: For the Spaniard - here playing form left to right - the match was of greater significance than for the Englishman. He had already chalked up a remarkable sequence of 21 consecutive wins. If he won this match he would have achieved the longest sequence of consecutive wins in modern tennis. But Cox was in good form, and it was obvious form the start that Orantes would have to fight for his record.

The 27 year-old Spaniard had last been defeated in September in the United States Championships. Though he lost this point, he said he wasn't under much strain.

Orantes was in devastating form on his serve, and several times Cox was unable to return the heavy top spin. Nevertheless, the Albert Hall corwd was treated to many long exciting rallies, with each player testing the other over the full area of the court. Cox was to eventually win this one.

In the second set Cox had led 3-1, but his hopes quickly disappeared as Orantes hit a series of great return shots. In the tenth game Orantes took the first match point. He won the two-set match 6-4, 6-4.

Afterwards the organisers presented him with a cake and an enormous bottle of whisky. He had to celebrate more than just another win.
