  • Description

As part of his country's ambitious trade expansion programme, Mexican President Luis Echeverria officially opened a new port in Puerto Madero, near the Mexican-Guatemala border, on Sunday (1 June).

Puerto to Madero is the 17th port established in recent years by the Mexican Government in its shipping trade-link build up.

For many years Mexico has had to rely on land transport to the United States and other countries' ships to export its products.

Now, the country has considerably expanded trade with Europe, Asia and Canada, and the Government is intent on providing the facilities to match.

Puerto Madero was a small fishing village, but is now one of the largest commercial ports in Mexico. It will also serve as a base for the new British-built Mexican Navy patrol boats that will cruise territorial waters and protect fishing grounds.

Puerto Madero is also the closest port to the new Guatemala oilfields.

Because of this, Guatemalan President General Kjell Laugerud was also present at the inauguration, and signed an agreement with President Echeverria allowing guatemala certain shipping rights in exchange for meeting part of the port's upkeep.
