  • Description

Two of the leading candidates for the French Presidency went into action in the first round of the election campaign on saturday (20 April)
Sole leftwing candidate Francois Mitterrand -- leader of the Socialist Party and with the total support of the Communist Party -- went into action at Bordeaux. Finance Minister Valery Giscard D'Estaing, who faces stiff opposition for the conservative and middle-of-the-road votes form Gaullist party candidate and former Prime Minster Jacques Chaban-Delmas, began campaigning in Auxerre in Yonne.

In the latest opinion polls results over the weekend, both conservative candidates were trailing lightly behind M. Mitterrand. Nine other candidates were contesting the first round.

Polls indicated that the first round vote on 5 May was expected to be indecisive, leading to a run-off on 19 May between M. Mitterrand and either M. Giscard D'Estaing or Mr Chaban Delmas. Meanwhile, there were continued efforte in the split Caullist Party to heal the divisions and form a united front against M. Mitterrend, whose popularity has been growing rapidly.

In Saturday's electioneering M. Mitterrand bentered light-heartedly with newsmen at a public meeting. Meanwhile. M. Giscard D'Estaing appealed for a large majority in order to carry out policies -- and a majority which should include all those who supported the policies of the late President Pompidou, he said.
