  • Description

Poland's Roman Catholic Primate Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, has called for freedom of Publication and an end to censorship. His call was made in a speech on Sunday (12 November).

SYNOPSIS: The occasion was the beginning of the academic year at the Catholic University of Lublin in Southeast Poland -- a school funded by the church and receiving no money from the government. The audience was filled with dignitaries. The Polish Minister for Religion was there, so were ten western ambassadors and, for the first time. the Mayor of Lublin. Cardinal Wyszynski used the opportunity to ask for more help for the school. But the Cardinal also asked for a much more controversial concession -- freedom of publication and an end to censorship.

He drew loud applause when he asked for freedom of publication. He asked what could be easier than to relax the limitations on the press and publishing. But for that freedom to occur, added the Cardinal, it is necessary to give generous pensions to all the censors. And, he said, to thank them for their work.
