    KATANGA POLICE WIELDED RIFLE BUTTS AND TRUNCHEONS SEPTEMBER 22 IN ELIZABETHVILLE, AS THEY SOUGHT TO DISPERSE A CROWD OF SEVERAL HUNDRED KASAI TRIBESMEN WHO HAD POURED INTO THE TOWN SEEKING FOOD.

    THE TRIBESMEN WERE AMONG THE 30,000 TO 45,000 BALUBAS HOUSED IN A UNITED NATIONS REFUGEE SHANTY TOWN. THEY RODE INTO THE CITY ON BICYCLES AND BEGAN LOOTING FOODSHOPS. THERE WERE SEVERAL ARRESTS.

    A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE CIVIL ORGANIZATION OF FOOD SUPPLY ASKED SHOPKEEPERS AND WHOLESALERS TO RETURN TO THEIR SHOPS, WORKERS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRIES TO RETURN TO THEIR JOBS, AND DECLARED THAT CONTRARY TO RUMOURS CIRCULATING, NO FOOD FAMINE EXISTED IN ELIZABETHVILLE.

    THE UNITED NATIONS MEANWHILE WAS RUSHING FOOD TO THE CAMP GUARDED BY ARMOURED CAR. THE FOOD WAS DISTRIBUTED IMMEDIATELY.
