  • Description

Two days after the breakdown of Henry Kissingers arab-Israel talks, and one day after Rabins report to the Knesset, prime minister Yitzhak Rabin began a debate within the ruling labour party on his actions. He has largely united the country behind the government, including even the usually stubborn opposition party Likyd, but has earned some criticism that he received more support from the hard-line Likud than from his own Labour party, some of whom would have preferred more flexible policy.

The meeting was held only hours after the announcement from Riadh that the Saudi Arabian leader King Feisal had been assassinated by one of his countless nephews. This act has been seen by some Israelis as further proof, if it was needed, that Israel is obliged to take a tough line with the Arabs as Arab polities is so volatile as to rule out any consistent policy. Why, the Israelis say, should we give up our trump cards - the Mitla, Giddi passes and the Abu Rodeis oilfields, - when we do not know how long the promises of our Arab negotiating partners can last.
