Background: IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY VICE PRESIDENT DANIEL ARAP MOI, SEVERAL OF HIS COLLEAGUES IN KENYA'S GOVERNMENT THE CHIEF JUSTICE AND THE U.S. AMBASSADOR JOINED A CONTINGENT OF ABOUT 1,200 PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WHO UNDERTOOK TO MARCH 23 MILES (37 KMS) IN AID OF DESERVING AGRICULTURAL PROJECTS.

    700 MARCHERS COMPLETED THE COURSE.

MR. KIANO, KENYA'S MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT, WAS AT THE CITY HALL TO WELCOME THE STAUNCH PARTICIPANTS WHO HAD HELD OUT TO THE END. AMONG THEM WERE BLIND PEOPLE, SCHOOLCHILDREN, AND MR. PAUL NGEI, THE HOUSING MINISTER, AS WELL AS THE U.S. AMBASSADOR, MR. PAUL ROBINSON MCILVAINE, WHO BEAT HIM TO THE POST.

A BAND AND APPLAUDING CROWDS MET THE WALKERS AT THEIR DESTINATION.

SPONSORS OF PARTICIPANTS IN THE WALK DONATED SUMS OF MONEY TOWARDS THE "FREEDOM FROM HUNGER" FUND FOR EVERY MILE COMPLETED. THE CONTRIBUTIONS WERE FOR YOUNG FARMERS' CLUBS, WATER SCHEMES, NUTRITION CENTRES AND OTHER PROJECTS.

THE VICE PRESIDENT, MR. MOI, WAS SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL CASINO COMPANY OF NAIROBI FOR 500 EAST AFRICAN SHILLINGS (ABOUT 33 POUNDS STERLING) A MILE; HE DROPPED OUT AFTER 14 MILES. OTHER PROMINENT WALKERS WERE THE KENYAN MINISTER FOR COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, MR. JAMES OSOGO, AND THE CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. KITITI MWEANDWAM.

THE KENYAN WALK COINCIDED WITH A SIMILAR ONE IN MINNEAPOLIS, U.S.A., ORGANISED BY THE FREEDOM FROM HUNGER FOUNDATION FOR KENYA.
