Background: New York City police pursued three bank robbers on foot and in the air with two police helicopters Tuesday, in an exciting chase that might have come right out of a Hollywood film studio.
Two of the robbers were caught, and the money was recovered.
The real life drama began 11:30 Tuesday morning when three men, wearing ski masks and armed with a shotgun and a .32 revolver held up a Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company branch on Linden Boulevard in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Ordering 15 bank workers and 25 customers not to move, the robbers scooped up several night deposit bags still unprocessed and filled with about 10,000 dollars. They fled outside and drove off in a white Buick sedan. Police cars cut them, however, and the trio smashed the car into a nearby building (the delivery entrance of a Printing Specialists Company). They then fled on feet into the snow covered swamps along Flatlands Avenue in Brooklyn, and tried to escape among the 6 feet high swamp grasses.
Armed police converged on the area. One man came out of the swamp and hid in the doorway of a building. He was captured without resistance.
At this time, two police helicopters were called in and began flying low over the swamp, looking for the other two men. The police pilots talked to the officers on the ground via walkie-talkie radios.
In a short time, one of the helicopters saw one of the suspects lying in the snow, hidden from the ground searchers by the grass. The helicopter hovered over the spot, directing the foot policemen to the scene.
The suspect was told to stay where he was by the officers, but, they said, he tries to run and was shot down and critically injured. He was still clutching one of the bags of money.
All the money was recovered and returned to the bank.
The third man escaped from the scene but was found hiding at his home Tuesday night.
