  • Description

The head of the Elf-Tyrrell racing team, Ken Tyrrell, is expected to make an announcement on the future of the team's revolutionary six-wheel Formula One racing car in the United Kingdom on Sunday (25 April).

The car is in Spain at the moment undergoing trials on the Jarama circuit in Madrid. Frenchman Patrick Depailler who has been driving the car said he had been very impressed by its handling, speed and acceleration.

The six-wheeler, designed by Derek Gardner, was first shown to the public in October last years. Since then, the prototype has been modified in preparation for its racing debut. It's been reduced in length and weight and equipped with a 42 gallon fuel tank.

At the Jarama circuit, Depailler has been taking the Elf-Tyrrell through its first official time trials. He may drive it in the Spanish Grand Prix on 2 May.

The designer, Derek Gardner, said having four front wheels increased the effective tread area of the tyres but reduced drag because all four wheels were hidden behind the "bluff" Formula One cars carry on their noses. He said the new steering arrangement could accomplish the equivalent of adding between 40 and 50 horse-power to the car's engine.
