    THOUSAND OF AMERICAN MARINES STATIONED IN CENTRAL JAPAN BEGAN TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY BY SEA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). IT WAS UNDERSTOOD THEY WERE SAILING FOR OKINAWA.

    THE MOVEMENT IS PART OF A LARGE MOVEMENT OF TROOPS, SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT IN THE PACIFIC FOLLOWING THE TENSE SITUATION NEAR VIETNAM. THE UNITED STATES HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT DESTROYER PATROLS IN THE GULF OF TONKIN ARE TO BE TEMPORARILY STOPPED. THIS IS EXPECTED TO LEAD TO AN EASING OF THE SITUATION IN THE AREA.

    MR. MCNAMARA, THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF DEFENCE HAS TOLD A JOINT MEETING OF THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE AND SENATE ARMED FORCES COMMITTEE THAT THE REINFORCEMENTS SENT TO THE PACIFIC WERE SUFFICIENT FOR THE TIME BEING. HE ASSURED THE MEMBERS THAT FURTHER REINFORCING STEPS COULD BE TAKEN VERY RAPIDLY IF THEY WERE CALLED FOR.
