  • Description

AT LEAST 289 PEOPLE DIED AND THOUSANDS WERE MADE HOMELESS BY FLOODS WHICH THIS WEEK DEVASTATED THE SOUTHERN COASTAL REGION OF SOUTH KOREA.

BESIDES THE HEAVY DEATH TOLL, ANOTHER 107 PEOPLE ARE MISSING IN THE FLOOD AREAS, AND 221 HAVE BEEN INJURED.

THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AT 105,000. POLICE PUT THE DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AT 6,500 MILLION WON (GBP9.7 MILLION STERLING).

THE FLOODS WERE UNLEASHED BY THE WORST SEPTEMBER RAINFALL IN THE SOUTHERN REGION FOR 10 YEARS. ABOUT HALF THE YEARLY AVERAGE RAINFALL FOR THE AREA WAS RECORDED ON SUNDAY (14TH SEPTEMBER) ALONE.

FLOODWATERS CONTINUED TO RAVAGE THE AREA THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. TWO VILLAGES, EACH CONSISTING OF 70 THATCHED HUTS, WERE COMPLETELY ENGULFED AS THE RAINS BROUGHT LANDSLIDES CRASHING DOWN UPON THEM.

TROOPS AND POLICE WERE RUSHED TO THE AREA TO HELP RESCUE WORKERS IN THE SEARCH FOR FLOOD VICTIMS. SOUTH KOREA IS REQUESTING EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLIES FROM THE UNITED STATES TO AID THE STRICKEN AREA.
