  • Description

Japanese Prime Minister, Kakuei Tanaka, set December 10 as the date for a general election following the dissolution on Monday (13 November) of the Diet, Japan's parliament.

The election for the four-hundred and ninety-one seats of the House of Representatives will be the first since Mr. Tanaka took over leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party last July.

Mr. Tanaka, who had repeatedly denied he would dissolve the Diet, faces an election at a time when his popularity is high. Recent public opinion polls have given him more than sixty per cent support.

His party at present holds 297 seats of the Lower House, a clear majority.

The four opposition parties holding seats in the Diet are: JSP (Socialist) with 87 seats; Komeito (right wing) with 47 seats; Democratic Socialist Party with 29 seats and Communist Party with 14 seats. There are three independents.
