  • Description

Workmen on a building site at Hampton, Middlesex, UK, are protected against bad weather, by a nylon "igloo" which completely covers the foundations of a house they are building. This huge transparent nylon fabric tent has an area of about 5,000 cubic feet, and shows no visible means of support. It is kept inflated by compressed air generated by fans.

To erect the nylon tent the sections are laid out on the ground and zipped together. The zips are airtight.

When the sections are in place, the doorway is constructed. The next stage is to peg the base of the tent into the ground.

Compressed air pumps are then set into action inside the tent and, in a matter of minutes, the whole structure is inflated. The light inside the transparent tent is better than outside, so no artificial lighting is required.

To collapse the nylon "igloo" all that is required is for the compressed air fans to be switched off.
