    CHURCH BELLS, TRADITIONAL CELEBRATIONS AND SIRENS WELCOMED THE NEW YEAR IN ACCRA AT MIDNIGHT ON SUNDAY (31 DEC).

    AS GHANAIANS ENTER THE NEW YEAR THEY HAVE BEEN URGED TO LEAD NEW LIVES, FREE FROM GREED, OSTENTATION AND SELFISHNESS, AND EXHORTED REDEDICATE THEIR SOUL TO THE SERVICES OF THE NATION.

    IN HIS NEW YEAR ADDRESS TO THE NATION THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH ALSO APPEALED TO GHANAIANS TO EXERCISE RESTRAINT IN THE EXCITING MONTHS IMMEDIATELY AHEAD OF THE NATION.

    HE HAS ALREADY STATED THAT PLANS FOR A RETURN TO CIVILIAN RULE WILL BE ANNOUNCES EARLY IN 1968.

    ON SUNDAY NIGHT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THRONGED CHURCHES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TO ATTEND THE TRADITIONAL WATCHNIGHT SERVICES. THE GENERAL AND HIS WIFE WERE AMONG THE CONGREGATION AT THE METHODIST CATHEDRAL IN ACCRA.

    THE END OF THE YEAR SERMON WAS PREACHED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE METHODIST CHURCH OF GHANA, THE REVEREND THOMAS KOOMSON.

    AFTER THE SERVICES FRIENDS AND RELATIONS GOT TOGETHER FOR THE PARTIES WHICH HAVE BECOME SO MUCH A PART OF THE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS.
