  • Description

In Cambodia, South Vietnamese and Vietcong Forces have been locked in vicious fighting around the strategic town of Prey Veng, 30 miles cast of Phnom Penh.

South Vietnamese marines, who have been active in Cambodia since the offensive began early last month, were flown in by helicopter to reinforce troops fighting near Prey Veng.

They were landed about eight miles east of the provincial capital and began a sweep on foot. They encountered a group of Cambodian villagers who had fled their homes when they got caught in the crossfire between the South Vietnamese and the Communists.

The injured had their wounds attended to while the dead were taken away for burial. Soon afterwards the marines came under fire from the distant treeline.

The air force was called in to pound the suspected Communist positions as the marines opened up with fire of their own. Later the marines entered the nearby village of Chamka Kuoy to find terrified villagers who had stayed behind from the spasmodic shipping. There were more casualties who were evacuated by helicopter.
