  • Description

At a crowded, suffocating conference in the Palais de Chaillot, Paris, May 16, the world's newsmen were told by an official Soviet spokesman what Soviet Premier Khrushchev had said in his statement at the morning Summit meeting.

Bringing fears of an immediate Summit breakdown, he had asked the US Government to condemn the US Air Force's "provocative actions" against the USSR; to halt "spy flights" against the USSR; and punish those "guilty" in this connection. Mr. Khrushchev also proposed a 6 to 8 month postponement of the Summit, postponement of the US President's planned visit to Russia; and blamed U.S. "reactionary circles" for torpedo-ing the Summit.

Soon after, US Press Secretary Hagerty told newdmen at another conference what President Eisenhower had said in reply to Premier Khrushchev.
