  • Description

Filbert Bayi of Tanzania easily won the indoor mile event in three minutes 56.1 seconds at the United States indoor athletics championships in New York on Friday (27 February).

His time was the fastest ever recorded in Madison Square Garden and it broke the meeting record of three minutes 59 seconds set in 1963 by American, Jim Beatty.

Tony Waldrop of the United Sates currently holds the world indoor mark of three minutes 55 seconds.

Bayi sprinted to the front in the first lap of the 11-lap race and led al the way. It was a three-man race most of the way, with Americans Paul Cummings and Ken Popejoy providing the only opposition.

Janice Merrill of Connecticut nearly stole the show by winning both the women's one-mile and two-mile races. Miss Merrill, the 1,500 metres (1,600 yards) champion a the 1975 Pan-American Games, first won two-mile in nine minutes 59.6 seconds and came back 30 minutes later to take the one mile event in four minutes 38.5 seconds. Both were meet records.

She lapped virtually the entire field in the two mile event to break the old record of 10 minutes 22 seconds. She was supposed to have 40 minutes' rest before the mile, but the schedule was running about 15 minutes fast at that point.
