  • Description

A SCALE MODEL OF A BRIDGE ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL, BUILT BY MECCANO, WAS FILMED IN PARIS, OCT 11. IT ILLUSTRATES A PROJECT ADVOCATED BY FORMER FRENCH MINISTER JULES MOCH IN RECENT TALKS WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.

THE MODEL BRIDGE IS 33FT LONG, OVER 3FT HIGH AND 2 1/2FT WIDE. TOY CARS FIXED TO A NYLON THREAD MOVE ALONG THE FOUR CENTRAL CARRIAGE WAYS, AND ELECTRIC MODEL TRAINS RUN ON RAILWAY TRACKS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE. THREE-FOOT REPLICAS OF THE GENERAL TRANSATLANTIC LINERS "FLANDRES" AND "ANTILLES" PLY THE PAPER SEA BENEATH.

    M. MOCH TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE IN LONDON, OCT 5, THAT A DIRECT LINK BETWEEN BRITAIN AND EUROPE WAS NOW A NECESSITY. THE CHOICE LAY BETWEEN A TUNNEL AND A BRIDGE. HE FAVOURED THE BRIDGE BECAUSE OF ITS MANY ADVANTAGES, ALTHOUGH IT WOULD COST ABOUT TWICE THE GBP110 MILLION ESTIMATED FOR THE TUNNEL.

A TUNNEL TO CARRY ROAD AND RAIL TRAFFIC WOULD HAVE TO BE 35 MILES LONG, AND WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO BUILD. TO DRIVE THAT DISTANCE IN A TUNNEL WOULD BE HARD AND COULD BE DANGEROUS. A RAIL TUNNEL WOULD MEAN PUTTING CARS ON CARRIERS, WITH A LOSS OF VALUABLE TIME AT PEAK HOURS. A BREAKDOWN COULD CAUSE LONG DELAYS AND WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO REPAIR. THE TUNNEL WOULD HAVE ONLY TWO TRAFFIC LANES COMPARED WITH NINE ON THE BRIDGE.

TACKLING OBJECTIONS TO THE BRIDGE, M. MOCH SAID IF THERE WAS FOG, THE BRIDGE WOULD BE BETTER LIGHTED THAN ANY ROAD ANYWHERE, ONLY ON VERY RARE OCCASIONS WOULD THICK FOR BAR THE APPROACHES TO THE BRIDGE. AS FOR WIND, DEFLECTORS NOW BEING TESTED COULD REDUCE WIND SPEEDS FROM 100 TO 22 MPH. THE FUNDS REQUIRED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BRIDGE COULD, HE BELIEVED, BE RAISED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN ALL THE COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES, IN SWITZERLAND AND THE UNITED STATES. ALL THAT WAS REQUIRED WAS THE CONSENT OF THE BRITISH AND FRENCH GOVERNMENTS.
