The freedom of religion is guaranteed to all citizens of Kenya. Just the same, many?
The freedom of religion is guaranteed to all citizens of Kenya. Just the same, many of its citizens are Moslems. Even those who are not are in some way affected by the teachings of the prophet Mohammed. Every year, thousands of Kenyans make the pilgrimage to the Mecca, the Holy city of Islam, in Saudi Arabia for prayer and meditation. Cameraman and photographer Mohamed Amin documented that holy journey in his book 'Pilgrimage to Mecca', just published in Kenya.
SYNOPSIS: Amin's book received praise from a Kenyan who is not a Moslem --- foreign Affairs Minister Munyua Waiyaki.
Amin spent two years photographing the devout from helicopter, Land Rover, camel-back and on foot as they came from all corners of the world to Mecca. He was among the first to be given permission to photograph the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. The Saudi Arabian Government gave him every facility he needed to capture the spirit and devotion of the Hajj, he pilgrimage to the Mecca.
Every Moslem wants to travel to one of the holy shrines at least once in a lifetime. Mohamed Amin captures the customs, beliefs and inner faith that drive the millions of Moslems to their sacred destinations.
