  • Description

In the north of the city, householders used grand hoses to keep flames away from their homes. In other areas, a main highway was cut, and ambulances were called ready to evacuate two convalescent hospitals after smoke filled the wards at the height of the crisis. To the south of the city, police ordered residents in one area to stand by for evacuation as a scrub blaze reached a danger level.

A total fire ban has been imposed on Sydney's inhabitants, who on Monday (4 October) celebrate a public holiday to mark the start of summer.
