  • Description

A memorial service was held at Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem on Thursday (28 February) in memory of Israeli soldiers whose graves are unknown. Twenty thousand people attended the ceremony. Some were the families and friends of men still missing after the list of sixty-five Israeli prisoners held by Syria was published on Wednesday (February 27). They have now been declared as 'missing, believed dead'. Also attending were Israel's Prime Minister, Mrs. Golds Meir, and the Defence Minister, Moshe Dyan. A man and a woman cried 'criminals - murderers' at them. After the ceremony Mrs. Meir could be seen weeping and comforting a young mother and her daughter.

The day before, the bodies of nearly two hundred Israeli dead buried in Egyptian territory were returned to Israel. Eighteen bodies were returned after being discovered by joint Israeli-Egyptian search parties. Twenty-eight Egyptian bodies found in Israeli territory were returned to Egyptians.
