Background: Despite consistent heavy rain, there were several outstanding performances at the West German international Athletic Tournament in West Berlin on Friday (22 August).
Highlight of the night was the brilliant win by 24-year-old Steve Williams of the United States in the men's 100 metres sprint.
Williams scorched through the rain to clock 9.9 seconds and equal the world record he shares with six other sprinters. His performance was even more outstanding as he appeared to have a little up his sleeve despite the blistering time.
Other great runs came from Mike Boit of Kenya who won the men's 800 metres race and Guy Drut of France who set a new world record for the men's 110 metres hurdles with a time of 13 seconds.
