Background: President Tombalbaye of the central African state of Chad has paid an official visit to Qatar -- the oil-rich state in the Arabian Gulf.
The President arrived in Qatar on Wednesday (2 May) following a three-day visit to the Untied Arab Emirates Federation in the Lower Gulf.
The visit is part of a major tour of the Middle East presently being undertaken by the Chadian leader. He was recently in Iran and, following his visit to Qatar, he was scheduled to pay an official visit to Kuwait.
The President visit was in response to an invitation extended by the Emir of Qatar, Shaikh Khalifa Hamad Al-Thani. Included in President Tombalbaye's 40-strong delegation were the Speaker of the Chad National Assembly, the Head of the Economic and Social Council of Chad, and the Chad Ministers for Public Health, Finance, Housing, Commerce, Industry, Land Reclamation and Water, as well as various military and information advisors.
The Emir of Qatar gave an official dinner party for his Chadian guests at his palace on the evening of their arrival.
Chad was one of the African states which last year broke off all diplomatic and other relations with Israel.
