    POLICE RETURNED TO THE ROMAN CATHOLIC FALLS ROAD AREA OF BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND, TODAY(FRIDAY) FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE STREET RIO BROKE OUT TWO MONTHS AGO. THE NEW CHIEF OF THE NORTHERN IRELAND POLICE, SIR ARTHUR YOUNG, LED A TOUR OF THE TROUBLED AREAS AND RECEIVED A WARM WELCOME WHEREVER HE WENT.

    SIR ARTHUR YOUNG, AS INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF THE ROYAL ULSTER CONSTABULARY, WAS ACCOMPANIED ON HIS TOUR BY MR JIM SULLIVAN, CHAIRMAN OF THE CATHOLIC CENTRAL CITIZENS DEFENCE COMMITTEE, FATHER PADRAIG MURPHY, A PRIEST, BRIGADIER PETER HUDSON, THE AREA'S BRITISH ARMY COMMANDER, TWO POLICEMEN AND SEVERAL MILITARY POLICEMEN.

    THE NEW INSPECTOR-GENERAL FOUND ALL QUIET IN THE AREA WHERE, AT THE WEEKEND, MILITANT PROTESTORS FIRED ON BRITISH TROOPS FLOWN IN TO DEAL WITH THE DISTURBANCES.

    SIR ARTHUR TOLD RESIDENTS ON A STREET CORNER THAT THE POLICE WERE COMING AS FRIENDS AND WERE COMING UNARMED.

    HE SAID THE POLICE WANTED TO WIN THE PEOPLE'S FRIENDSHIP AND THEIR REGARD, BUT WERE NOT GOING TO DO IT WITH A GUN.
